Guitar Hero Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe Connected Generations Between Rock Fans

It has been two decades since Guitar Hero debuted in North America, providing everyday gamers the opportunity to feel like a rock star. Not in reality, but try convincing someone who's nailed the epic four-minute instrumental break before a packed crowd of friends.

Created by Harmonix, the game gave players a guitar-shaped controller to follow on-screen cues moving along the display in time with a song. Each riff mimicked specific notes, creating the sensation of an authentic performance.

Harmonix previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar franchise which made a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists included, showcasing classic groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, recalls the early budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – even though initial releases primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded every song since the cost was so high,” he explains. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. However, when the game became a hit, and record sales airtime increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was the number of parents got in touch and thanked us for introducing their children to the songs they adored. It became an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Lead musician Paul Mahon recalls the way the game revived older hits back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a bigger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered outdated material, but then when it was included in the game young people were finding it, abruptly it was cool. This validated it, eliminating the outdated label. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album was still not available stateside, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the band during their US tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew were playing Never Too Late on the tour bus, and several knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles and Lasting Influence

Rock’s biggest acts quickly capitalised on the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in specialized game editions that focused on their music collections and related lore, visuals and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the group more money compared to their records. It moved well over half a million units upon release, while sales of Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% during an era when the music business faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered fanaticism among its fans. Earlier this year, an online personality achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar gameplay and extensive personalization features. This track is difficult even in the hardest setting, not to mention played at increased tempo while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer claimed it took months of practice of practice.

“The game is a fun, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you should use a real gun and enlist,” says musician the artist.

DragonForce previously completed a profitable run when their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it made them a household name. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that our records were moving rapidly,” he says. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it threatened to eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the song featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought otherwise, but now I accept it,” Li says. “Should you just hear a single track, it’s totally cool – each person has their own path in music and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact of a Plastic Guitar

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of being a rock star on the stage. From day one, the creators believed there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and their goal was to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games were released in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles like the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Titles such as Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene alive, and there’s set to be something from the original publisher in development. A new studio has entered production on their first rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are participating as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“Our team believed such titles could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain evergreen, so I’ve always been optimistic. There’s no reason why it can’t persist for future fans.”
